I’m a passionate and experienced theatre journalist, publicist and communicator, working for Theatre People and a number of independent companies and productions over the last five years to create engaging and stand out theatre and content. But in a time where the arts section in The Age has been reduced to half a page, and arts jobs are less and less, I would like to head to the West End/ Edinburgh Fringe, to one of two of these biggest arts hubs in the world to learn from innovators and creative thinkers and be exposed to new ideas and redefine how we think about the arts, and bring this experience back to Melbourne to help market it as the arts capital of Australia.
This project will equip me with new skills and develop my career further, and push me to experience new performances and ideas. This will help me bring cutting edge thinking back to Australia to continue to refresh and innovate in the arts space and help artists promote their work, venues or companies. Journalism and publicity in the arts allow new audiences to discover new art, and helps companies and artists reach monetary goals such as selling out shows and making their living, and I help facilitate this cycle and allow the arts to continue to be viable in a commercial setting.
These will get me across the pond to the cultural capitals of London and/or Edinburgh. I will be able to create new networks and access new performances and content, as well as look for professional development opportunities such as courses or workshops with experts in their fields. I will be able to be present where the action is happening to gather intel and expertise.
