We are supporting acclaimed pianist Elyane Laussade with her Mozart Project by featuring her with 3 Piano Concertos in 3 concerts. We also have 2 special concerts: In July Justin Kenealy plays Bach Violin Concertos on Soprano Saxophone for his PhD, Anne Harvey-Nagl and Sally Clarke Play Mozart’s wondrous Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola and tenor Lorenzo Lanotti sings popular Italian arias. In November David Soo plays Beethoven Piano Concerto No.1; Mia Yang plays Haydn Violin Concerto No.1 and Anne Gilby plays Cimarosa Oboe Concerto…
All the soloists are talented Australians. Anne Harvey-Nagl is Concertmaster of the Vienna Volksopera, Sally Clarke is violist in Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, David Soo and Mia Yang have been establishing their careers in London. Anne and Sally will be here as members of the Australian World Orchestra.
We provide an important platform for local artists to help further their careers and give much welcomed opportunities to musicians to play in a chamber orchestra.
Over the years many of our young musicians have graduated to professional orchestra like the MSO and Orchestra Victoria while others have joined reputable orchestras overseas.
Many of the soloists have gone on to establish international careers, the most notable examples being Slava and Leonard Grigoryan, who first played with us at the ages of 12 and 11 respectively, and cellist Li Wei Qin, who played with us at 15 before going to London to further his studies. There is a long list of other musicians who have gone on to do extremely well after being given their first opportunity with The Melbourne Musicians.
It is very expensive to run a chamber orchestra and the main expense is payment of the musicians. Donations make it possible to pay them and may even allow for an extra rehearsal to improve the quality of the performance.
