The Curators are independent, Brisbane based professional artists working together to bring new life to classical theatre. Our name is derived from a broad take on the concept of curation, a word born of the Latin for “one who cares”. Because we do.
The Curators began in August 2017 with a production of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, the first professional production of the play staged in Brisbane for 86 years. In May last year, The Curators staged Amanda McErlean’s exciting provocative one woman show about middle aged loneliness and depression, The Quighting Time, followed by the critically acclaimed October production of The Third Beauty, an exploration of gender in Shakespeare’s female roles. The Curators first production in 2019 is a bold, new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts, commencing July 19.
The Curators was founded by Michael Beh (Fulbright Fellow who studied directing at CMU/USA with Moscow Art Theatre School) and Peter Crees and has grown to include mid-career and senior artists: Warwick Comber, Adrienne Costello, Tom Coyle, Lisa Hickey, Amanda McErlean, Helen Strube and Elizabeth Wherrett whilst also nurturing emerging, young artists including Patrick Shearer, Lauren Roche and Bethany Scott.
