Once upon a time there was a band called Jenny M. Thomas & The System who pulled apart traditional Australian folk songs then put them back together again in strange and beautiful ways. Their debut album ‘Bush Gothic’ was described by the press as ‘Outstanding’ and ‘Extraordinary’ and since everybody liked the name ‘Bush Gothic’ the band have now made it their own name.
They have given two national tours, received airplay around the world, had a track chosen for inclusion on the Roots UK ‘Best of 2012 Worldwide’ album plus performed at festivals including MONA FOMA, Castlemaine State Festival and Brunswick Music Festival. An obsession with string quartet music and stories from the Victorian goldfields led to the band’s main composer, Jenny M. Thomas, being awarded a Creative Victoria grant in 2014 to compose string quartet parts for arrangements of old Victorian-era songs, thus the Victorian Heartbreak Project was born. The new work was performed at the Melbourne Recital Centre and the Castlemaine Art Gallery and has been recorded recently at Newmarket Studios.
