James Blackford graduated with a bachelor’s degree in advanced performance from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in 2014. During his studies he was awarded first place in numerous competitions, performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and successfully auditioned for the position of solo euphonium with the NSW Police Band.
In conjunction with this role, James has continually worked as a freelance performer. Highlights include performances with Warringah Brass, Pacific Brass, National Australia Brass As well as numerous recording projects, most recently as principal euphonium with Pacific Brass during an Australian first brass band recording at the ABC. As a soloist James has won state and national euphonium titles, appeared in the final round of the Macquarie Philharmonic concerto competition and the semi-final of the euphonium artist division at the 2016 International Tuba Euphonium conference.
James is the current national euphonium champion and in October 2019 will perform in the live finals of the Australian Music Foundation Awards, held at the Royal Academy of Music, London. James looks forward to embarking on the next stage of his career in Manchester studying a Master of Music at the Royal Northern College of Music.
