FOLK Magazine is an independent publishing body that was founded in the spring of 2016 to fill an evident gap within Australia’s entertainment and arts industry— the representation of Artists of Colour. As an organisation, we set out to remove the barriers that may impede cultural leaders and organisations, from employing Artists from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds, exhibiting their work, and fostering a diverse mixture of emerging artists.
A key method in our approach to reshaping our stages, galleries and screens was to publish a digital directory of Artists of various disciplines. This ever growing listing has, at present, over 300 artists within it, and has simplified the search for those practitioners who want to collaborate cross-culturally.
Alongside this, our magazine, which until now has solely had an online presence, has provided publishing experience, exposure and helped build an anthology of new work from a range of emerging and established writers and visual artists. Our hope is to further foster the growth and edification of our industry.
