Duoz is Jason and Kirsten Tong, violin and cello, husband and wife. Based in Brisbane and established in 2018, Duoz explores the musical world for violin and cello, sharing this with audiences through concerts and collaborations.
Duoz is grounded in the classical music genre, and actively seeks to perform Australian music and new music: in their first two concerts Duoz performed repertoire standards (Handel-Halvorsen’s ‘Passacaglia’, Kodály’s ‘Duo Op. 7’), lesser-known works from the 20th century (Martinů’s ‘Duo No. 1’, Villa-Lobos’s ‘2 Chôros (bis)’), works by Australian composers (Betty Beath’s ‘Encounters’, Paul Stanhope’s ‘Songline’), and recently written music by composers of other nationalities (Lei Liang’s ‘Gobi Canticle’, Pēteris Vasks’s ‘Castillo Interior’).
2019 sees Duoz perform multiple concerts, including a collaboration with the chamber choir Fusion. In April 2019, at the request of the composer, Duoz made the first recording of Betty Beath’s ‘Encounters’. In July 2019, Duoz will travel internationally to attend professional development workshops in Italy and the United Kingdom, with these workshops directly influencing Duoz’s performances on their return to Australia.
