Founded in 1993, Black Hole Theatre is an independent company that develops and presents puppetry and cross-art form performance in collaboration with artists from every field. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Nancy Black, BHT also facilitates the work of emerging artists, provides skill development opportunities to artists and the public, and collaborates with local and international artists and companies.
BHT is renowned for innovative, award winning productions such as AND THE ASS SAW THE ANGEL, CARAVAN, COOP, and most recently LES MÉDUSES, BLIND, and THE BOOK OF REVELATIONS. In addition BHT has produced ten PUPPET SLAMS in Victoria and NSW regional and metropolitan venues, boosting the profiles of local artists and developing audiences for puppetry.
Our new project, THE LINE, an international co-production with established and emerging Indigenous artists, Irish artists, Dowtcha Puppets, and of course BHT, will present our most challenging work to date. Driven by dynamic visuals, set against the backdrop of the infamous Black Wars, it examines an unlikely relationship between two women – an Aboriginal fleeing the sealers who kidnapped her, and a pregnant escaped Irish convict.
